When I first heard about eBay I didn’t give too much though about it. I had no occasion to buy anything from the site or to sell anything over it. Ebay is such a big boost for someone like me.

It was then that I realized that having an online business holds a tremendous amount of potential. I was not wrong with my choice. My business is growing bigger with each passing month. It was never easy though. I had my share of false starts. I spent about 25 years as a portrait photographer working from my home. I started out when my oldest child of 6 was born, by going to a private seminar given by a very successful portrait photographer in his home studio. I went for years to seminars and conventions dragging babies, strollers and sometime my older kids with me to babysit while I sat in on  the various lectures. Even though I have since moved on  to working on an internet based business based on a type of art education I call educational arts and crafts, I still have some great pieces of advice for aspiring portrait photographers.

My point of view is  from that of being a mother, housewife and photographer all rolled into one. When I first began I thought that being in business at home was the absolute ideal set up. I had originally worked as a preschool teacher until I decided I wanted to be  home with my children and figured I could combine my passion for photography  with my desire to be home with my young children. It was not as easy as it sounded.

I learned some very important things as I struggled to create a successful home, photography studio.In the beginning my studio was in a separate room of my house but, try telling that to a 2 yr old who is very interested in all of the things having to do with the business that she can get to. So I learned how important it is to make sure that your business is in a part of the house that your children cannot get to.

I also learned that one cannot do business with children at home unless you have some kind of babysitting set up for them. It is ideal to bring them away from the home while you are working or to keep them in a very part seperate of the house. It is also important to make very clear boundaries between your home life and business or else the business tends to start to take over your life.

As I continued taking photography and marketing seminars, I learned the valuable marketing lesson of learning the importance of knowing your numbers in  business plus the marketing advice given by many, of creating a niche for oneself. Most people who become a photographer do so because they love photography and want to make a business out of something they love. However, it is easier to become a photographer than it is to become a business person. It is more important to learn how to run a business and how to market oneself, before one throws oneself into the photography part of it. Unfortunately, many artistic people are not very business minded.

One of the best pieces of advice I can give to a photographer starting out is to find a niche in photography to concentrate on. Within the photography field itself there are many subsections. There is commercial photography, portrait, food, and fashion photography  to  just name a few. However, I believe that you have to niche yourself even in the particular field of photography that you choose to develop.

If you want to be a successful portrait photographer, then it is vital to brand yourself as well with a certain style. When people start to recognize your work, by the style of work you do then you know that you are on the road to success. There is a great temptation to do everything and to make people happy. If you stick to the type and style of portrait photography that is different and recognizable then you will start getting recognized for that particular style and will develop a clientele. Eventually even people that were not interested in that particular style will start to use your services as your name and brand become synonymous with class and luxury.
